The newly-restored CITGO sign is illuminated by solid-state LEDs (light-emitting diodes) instead of neon tubes that lit the sign between 1965 and 2004. View Larger Photo

Boston, Massachusetts 2 April 2006
The rebuilt CITGO sign uses light-emitting diode (LED) modules to replace the glass neon tubes used in the sign from 1965 to 2004. The LED modules are apparently not as reliable as hoped. While providing brilliant color with less electricity, one visual disadvantage to the new LEDs is that the modules are all straight lines, no curved elements were made. The curved letters in CITGO once represented in looping blue neon are approximated by straight bars of blue LEDs. View Larger Photo

The newly-restored CITGO sign that towers over Kenmore Square is illuminated by solid-state LEDs (light-emitting diodes) instead of neon tubes that lit the sign between 1965 and 2004. View Larger Photo

The new CITGO sign over Kenmore Square differs from her neon trimark predecessor. Light sequence timing has changed to an even and predictable background wipe, triangle shrink and grow, then blink twice and repeat. Gone is the irregular and unevenly-timed triangle sequence and simultaneous background wipe that made the sign seem organic and mesmerizing. View Larger Photo
