John Greenleaf Whittier Bridge

Interstate 95 spans the Merrimack River on the John Greenleaf Whittier Bridge. Opened in 1954, the Whittier Bridge once carried the relocated U.S. Route 1 and now carries six lanes of Interstate 95.

Bridge Railing

When I-95 was widened in the mid-1970s, many new overpasses over the highway featured this bizarre and rust-prone style of steel railing. While some of these railings were removed and replaced with more conventional railings by the mid-1980s, they remain on three overpasses.

Bridge Railing

The railing on this overpass is rusting more than one this age should. Also noteworthy is that the state seal is form cast into the concrete instead of the usual brass medallion.
