North
North of Boston, Route 128 connects commuters to Interstate 93 and employment centers such as Burlington and Woburn. Much of this roadway was widened in the early 1960s, including sections opened to traffic just years earlier in 1951.

North Shore
On the North Shore, Route 128 through Peabody, Danvers and Beverly features ornate bridge railings and decorative facades along with the narrow roadway and insufficient acceleration and deceleration lanes typical of an expressway built in the 1940s.

Cape Ann
Route 128 connects Cape Ann to the rest of Massachusetts via an elegant steel arch bridge over the Annisquam River.

Relics
As aging highways are modified and relocated, relics of old alignments and unfinished plans are left behind. This is a small collection of photos that includes abandoned and bypassed roadways and even a highway stub leading to a non-existant paper street.
